Remember to clean brake dust off your wheels

Do you notice a black powder-like residue on your vehicle's wheels? If it isn't dirt, it could be brake dust. Brake dust sticks to your vehicle's tires, making them look dirty. Brake dust is not just bad for the wheels of your vehicle, it can also cause serious problems.

WHAT IS BRAKE DUST?

Brake dust is made up of small pieces of particulate matter that has been removed from your brake pads. Brake systems are made up of several components, including brake pads, calipers, and rotors. To slow down your car, press down on the brake pedal. The brake pads will be squeezed by the brake calipers.

Every time you press the brake pedal, the brake pads are squeezed. The brake pads will begin to wear from the constant squeezing. Brake pads can be broken off by tiny pieces of material. Also, small pieces of the wheels may also break. This particulate matter is then called brake dust.

HOW BRAKE DUST AFFECTS YOUR WHEELS

You could scratch your wheels if you don't clean brake dust. Brake dust, also known as brake rotors, is made from the same material as brake pads. This is why it has metal shavings. Brake dust mostly consists of iron and carbon. The iron shavings build up on your vehicle's tires and can cause scratches.

Also, brake dust can clog valve stems. Valve stems are small tubes that can be used to fill up tires with air. A cap is usually attached to the stem to keep debris from getting inside. A valve stem without a cap or with a damaged cap may allow brake dust to get in. Brake dust could get inside the valve stem, causing a blockage. You won't be allowed to fill the valve stem with air due to the blockage.

TIPS FOR CLEANING BRAKE DUST

A proper wheel cleaner will remove brake dust from the wheels of your vehicle. There are several types of wheel cleaning products. Many of them are liquid- or foam-based sprays. Although they can damage the vehicle's body, they are safe for use on the wheels. These wheel cleaners are very effective in removing stubborn brake dust.

You may also need a wheel cleaner. Brake dust is sometimes stubborn. You cannot always get rid of brake dust with water spraying. A soft-bristle brush can be used to remove brake dust. The brush can be used to scrub your vehicle's tires. After that, you can rinse the brush. With a little elbow grease, brake dust should be easily removed.
