Checklist for Purchasing a used Car

It is not easy to buy a used vehicle. There is no way to spend a lot of money on a used vehicle only to find that it needs many repairs. It is important to make an informed decision. However, not all car experts are able to spot issues during a test drive. Although it's nice if the previous owner can provide a detailed vehicle history report, this is rarely the case.

Here's our used car buying guide. It includes things that anyone can look out for, no matter how mechanically skilled they are.

Visual Checks

Even if the engine isn't working, it's worth giving the car a thorough visual inspection.

Begin by inspecting the car's frame. Look around the vehicle to determine if any of its panels are a different colour from the others. If one panel is missing, it could be a sign that the vehicle has been involved in an accident. After-market paint jobs tend to fade more quickly than factory paint. It's not always a bad thing to buy a vehicle that's been in a car accident, but if the owner isn’t open about it, it's likely a red flag.

You should inspect the underside of your car. You should inspect the underside of your car for any rusty or very dirty parts. Even if you don’t have any knowledge about car engines, a well-maintained vehicle should be clean and free from rust. Check for rust around the wheel wells, door locks, and other areas as part of your pre-purchase inspection.

Sound Checks

It is possible to diagnose a problem by listening to unusual noises. You should test drive the car on a freeway. This will allow you to feel how it feels and sounds at higher speeds. Pay attention when you are changing gears, braking or turning corners. Not healthy sounds for cars include clunking, flapping, and grinding. There could be many problems with the vehicle if you hear these sounds. If you are unsure if buying a vehicle that needs repairs is the right decision, make sure to have it checked by a professional first.

Smells like checks

A problem with a car's condition can also be indicated by unusual or bad smells. Here are some common smells that can indicate trouble:

  • Burning rubber could indicate that belts are sliding or that hoses are missing. The burning smell could be caused by them rubbing against the drive pulleys. This could indicate that the brakes are not working properly.
  • If you smell burning oil, it could indicate that oil is leaking into your exhaust. This could be a sign that oil is leaking into the exhaust. After you have completed your test drive, inspect the hood for any signs of oil splatters and smoke. Check the driveway to see if there are any oil leaks.
  • The gas smell could be a sign of a leakage in the fuel tank, injector line or another part.
  • You may smell sweetening if your engine coolant is leaking.
  • The vehicle emits an exhaust odor. Vehicles that smell like exhaust are likely to have a leaky exhaust. This could indicate that carbon monoxide is entering the vehicle. It can cause brain damage or even death.

Make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection.

Follow this used car buying checklist. Make sure to bring the vehicle in for a pre-purchase inspection. This small investment will ensure your vehicle is safe and in good condition. Certified automotive technicians will examine all components inside and outside the vehicle to ensure that you are making the right buying decision.
